Argentinian Onyx Sculpture on a base of black granite.
Graham and his wife Margit lived in Italy for 6 years from 1987, and after that Graham went back every 2 years for working trips. It is because of this ongoing and enduring connection with the people in the marble industry in Pietrasanta and Carrara, Tuscany that Graham has access to most rare and high quality marble and onyx from all over the world. During those working trips Graham chooses blocks of marble and onyx to ship home in their raw form to his workshop in Australia. There are a few tricks of the trade to make sure a block of stone is sound. When you are browsing the marble yards, you are never without a spray bottle or a hammer. A light spray of water on the rough block evaporates quickly, but leaves a line over a crack that would have been invisible to the naked eye. And stone rings like glass when it is sound and sounds dull over a crack. But with onyx there is still a risk when it comes to colour. It is always a surprise at the very end, what you end up with in respect of colour intensity, thickness of layers and colour variety. Legato is a winner on all accounts, the solid dark green and gentle flow of markings is absolutely breathtaking. It is perfectly named, since the musical term Legato means “in a smooth flowing manner, without breaks between notes”. Graham always creates with classical music in the background. The theme of music is reflected in many a piece. Legato joins the ranks of Opus in Green, Romance, Toccata, Fuga and Resonance.
