Yondee Shane Hansen is a Noongar artist from Western Australia, specifically from Dumbleyung. Born in 1964, he spent his early years in WA’s southwest and later near Perth, with his life experiences profoundly influencing his art. His bush name, Yondee, translates to Black Goanna. As a child, Yondee learned about his culture and art from his father and older relatives, including painting on paper bark using natural materials. He began painting with found materials, drawn to the stark contrast of black and white. Today, Yondee creates sand paintings using sand collected from creeks, depicting stories and legends of his people, and also paints figurative works. He has exhibited his work extensively in Australia and internationally, including with the Campfire group of Aboriginal artists.
